How Movement Can Transform Your Health

Have you ever felt trapped by persistent pain or discomfort and wondered if your body is simply failing you? I recently met with a client who had experienced significant shoulder and neck discomfort for seven years. Despite his love for skiing and running, he found himself caught in a loop of inactivity fueled by fear of injury. This is a common journey where the real issue lies not in a need for new medication or therapy but in a lack of movement. The disconnect isn't about setting ambitious goals like returning to skiing, but rather about how one prepares for these activities by incorporating consistent and thoughtful movement.

Why Your Sedentary Lifestyle is Holding You Back

Many of us spend our days sitting, whether at a computer or another sedentary task, unaware of the toll this takes on our bodies. This client, for example, admitted, "My posture isn't great," reflecting a widespread issue among people I see in my practice. As a result of his inactivity, his spine was compressed and his breath shallow, triggering a cascade of muscle tension and pain.

Our bodies are not built for stillness; they thrive on movement, much like a river ecosystem that flourishes only with the continuous flow of fresh water. When sitting becomes habitual, joints become undernourished, and what should be vibrant turns into what my professor called "inflammatory soup." Movement is pivotal—it interrupts stagnation and nurtures our bodies.

I coach clients to set simple, frequent movement breaks as powerful interventions against a sedentary norm. For instance, every 45 minutes, take a minute to engage your spine—rolling forward then backward, bending side to side, and twisting gently to promote circulation and relieve tension.

When you truly understand your inner world, everything in your outer world shifts.

The Power of Intentional Movement

Movement should not be viewed solely as a remedy for pain; it is a pathway to vitality and physical freedom. The client realized its power when I challenged him, "If you run right now, do you think your shoulder would hurt?" His insightful pause and eventual "no" allowed him to see that he was capable of movement without pain.

Intentional movement, even something as modest as jogging on the spot, proved beneficial. The change was almost immediate: his spine lengthened, chest opened, and shoulders felt less burdened. The truth is, movement corrects posture more effectively than sitting up straight.

Learning to reintroduce movement gradually and consistently can yield profound improvements. This client's experience shows that such changes are not only possible but sustainable when approached thoughtfully. Intentionality in movement not only provides relief but also prepares the body for dynamic activities like skiing, aligning readiness with aspirations.

If someone was to come and I put my hands on them and fix the pain, it truly isn't the essence of my job.

Small Steps Toward Resilience

For anyone bound by sedentary habits, the shift toward a movement-infused lifestyle doesn't require monumental changes. Start small: walk briskly, swing your arms, and most importantly, do not fear movement despite past injuries.

Implement practices like the XYZ spine reset I advocate, and remember: the point isn’t perfection but consistency. These minute-long exercises pave the way for increased flexibility, better breathing, and reduced stress responses, fostering an environment where your body can heal itself.

This journey isn't about fixing what's broken; it's about understanding what your body needs to thrive. Movement is indeed medicine, and embracing it can fundamentally alter your life.
